Jean-Louis Poiroux is the Founder of Cinq Mondes, pioneer and leader of the French Spa. His experiences at L’Oréal London, then at L’Oréal International allowed him to discover Ayurvedic traditions in London, aromatherapy, Spas and Onsens in Japan, as well as Facial Care Rituals in Bali, Taoist Rituals in China and finally Hammam Rituals.
For a year and a half, he explored the world to experience Spas, Rituals and Beauty Recipes from around the world in all 5 continents, establishing partnerships with scientists from these 5 regions.
He brings together all these traditions in a unique place, the first Cinq Mondes Spa opened in 2001 in the heart of the golden triangle in Paris. For the past 20 years, he has been developing numerous Cinq Mondes Spas, notably in luxury hotels (Beau Rivage Palace in Lausanne, Monte Carlo Bay in Monaco, Kempinski Palm Jumeirah in Dubai…) The Spas are remarkable for their architectural originality, the refinement of their rituals and the creativity and naturalness of their cosmetic formulations.

WHAT MAKES YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING?

Curiosity about the day ahead: what encounters, what new ideas will come up? This is the promise of a full, exciting, surprising day….
So the day begins with breathing exercises inspired by yoga: pranayamas, followed by meditation; the mind is clearer, more available to the new and more alert.
Travels, when they come back, will also be a daily source of inspiration; for Cinq Mondes the promise of the discovery of Korean, Balinese beauty rituals… Is a great motivation and stimulation in knowledge and creativity ….

IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY/VISION OF THE FUTURE?

A conviction that I have developed over the years is that ancestral knowledge has a lot to offer us, including for the future. For Cinq Mondes, we study the Beauty Rituals of the World and traditional medicines which, in the case of Ayurvedic medicine, are sometimes 4,000 years old… So our understanding of the future has a lot to gain from being enriched by ancient philosophies: Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medicine, which literally means “ayur” “long life” and “veda” “science and knowledge”, deals with health in a very meaningful way; in Sanskrit, health is called “swasta”, which literally means “to remain balanced within oneself”.
It is not the fact of not being sick as in the West that is the marker of health but the fact that the physical, mental and emotional are aligned; this is the basis of the Ayurvedic philosophy and it has never seemed so modern today, especially for apprehending the future.
And the health of the individual and all the notions of balance that are attached to it continue with the concern for the health and the great balances of the planet itself, a great challenge for the future and even more so for the present.

WHAT HAS 2020 TAUGHT YOU?

2020 has taught us that man, despite technological progress, do not control everything. This is a big change compared to the myth of eternal and uninterrupted growth that has developed over the last 20 years.
As a result, this year has also taught me the extraordinary capacity of human beings to adapt: to health regulations, to remote work, to the impossibility of travelling, to a permanent anxiety about COVID….
We have found immense resources to continue to live in balance, in permanent social interaction and there for the blow thanks to technological advances, Zoom and 5G….
At Cinq Mondes we have noticed that from the very first days of the end of the lockdown, our clients come back immediately for treatments, to take vital time for themselves, time to connect with themselves and their inner well-being, but also time for contact with their Spa therapist. I am convinced that as soon as the collective immunity will allow us to live almost normally again, it will also be time to be able to have treatments again and to visit the Spas, to cultivate one’s well-being and one’s own serenity, which is no mean feat…!

YOUR NEXT BIG CHALLENGE?

For 3 years I have been working on a second prestigious address in Paris for Cinq Mondes; we have been chosen among the most prestigious brands in Europe to offer a unique Spa experience in the heart of Paris facing the Seine river! The horizon is very close, end of May!
The architectural development with the architect Alexandre Pierart was exciting from start to finish, from the choice of noble materials, travertine, brass, solid wood, to the perspectives, as well as the different atmospheres between the reception and advice lounge and the intimacy of the treatment rooms.

WHAT IDEAS / EXPERIENCES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOUR PEERS?

I would like to share with everyone the impetus to get together in conferences, events, cafes, theatres, cinemas!
We have finally learned to live better with our own interiority during this last year to better find ourselves in 2021!
