Laurent Maugoust represents with relevance in his creations the subtle duality of the Parisian style. Intimately attached to the history of the places he invests in, the interior architect imagines his projects through the prism of his refined and timeless universe. He plays with the codes of the Haussmannian style and all that is specific to it: know-how, craftsmanship and beautiful materials are the basis of his creations.
For the past twenty years, he has been working on top-of-the-range hotel projects in Paris, France and around the world. His most recent projects include the decorations for the **** Le Roosevelt hotel in Nice, the ***** Le Bowmann hotel in Paris, and the **** Victor Hugo hotel.
Laurent Maugoust also designed the Suite Space in the Design Pavilion of the 2020 edition of EquipHotel, in which he questioned in a visionary way the new needs and uses of the hotel industry. The vital and societal changes brought about by the health crisis and climate issues are all subjects that question him on a daily basis.

WHAT MAKES YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING?

Above all, desire. The desire to undertake, to imagine new places, to meet new people, to initiate projects and experiments. To be on the move.

IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY/VISION OF THE FUTURE?

A philosophy I don’t know, certainly principles of life. Professionally, I think you should always question yourself, try to be demanding and forward-thinking, have the modesty not to take anything for granted and know how to surround yourself.
I am an optimist, I like to believe that the future will lead us to more humanistic and virtuous projects. For this to happen, we need to create synergies and know how to surround ourselves with competent and passionate people. I am lucky enough to be able to choose my working environment, and over the years I have built up a diverse team with whom I enjoy working every day.

WHAT HAS 2020 TAUGHT YOU?

Unquestionably what it was like to have time. The constraint of successive confinements has allowed me to envisage my job in a different time frame.
This slowing down has in a way refocused me on my deepest aspirations. An opportunity to see new perspectives.

YOUR NEXT BIG CHALLENGE?

An eponymous furniture publishing house that I will present exclusively at Silvera Saint Germain from 7 to 18 July and during Paris Design Week. It’s very exciting, I’ll tell you more soon.

WHAT IDEAS / EXPERIENCES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOUR PEERS?

When I was invited in 2020 to speak about the future of the hotel industry at EquipHotel, I sketched out a plural suite in which I returned to the archetypes of hotel mythology and their potential. Thought of as a penthouse and a place to be embodied, La Suite, which was therefore intended to remain a utopia, gave rise to another one: the greenhouse, a manifesto project in which, with an architect and a landscape engineer, we reflect on how to reintroduce life into the city. I naturally visualised this greenhouse on the roofs of Paris. The capital has nearly 1600 hotels and as many roofs. We are looking at the potential of elevation. It is a question of sketching out landscapes, working on visual and sensory perspectives, and questioning our representations of the city. A space between the interior and the exterior and more broadly between man and his environment. Inventing one’s living spaces, allowing the singularity of each “island” to emerge, drawing up scenarios with the aim of going beyond the strict functional logic of the hotel industry: my aim is to establish new uses without prescribing.
